As childhood obesity levels rise, schools are looking for healthy fundraisers as an alternative solution for raising much needed funds. Many school districts have even banned fundraising candy sales, so what kind of school fundraisers will help bridge the funding gap?

Here are several ideas for healthy school fundraisers:

Participant events

Many schools have discovered that events where all students participate in a fun exercise-based event do a good job. Examples of this are school walkathons, rope jumping contests, and fun runs.

Students raise funds by getting sponsorship pledges linked to their performance. For instance, a pledge sheet for a fun run or a walkathon might suggest a donation of $1 a lap or $5 a mile.

In a jump rope contest, pledges might be raised by the number of consecutive jumps a student performs or by a set amount for each participant. The important thing is that parents are encouraging their children to be physically active as part of a fundraiser versus buying candy to help support their school.

Nonfood product sales

There are also plenty of fundraising products that can be sold that don’t involve candy or other unhealthy foods. Examples include books, magazines, gift wrap, flowers, plants, calendars, candles, pumpkins, and kitchen accessories.

All of these items have the same type of markups as products like candy, doughnuts, or cookie dough. The key point is that these are all healthier alternatives.

Healthy food products

For food-based sales, why not offer items such as fresh citrus fruit, nuts, spices, coffee, granola bars, or bottled water? Each of these items will generate the same kind of revenue and profit as their unhealthier alternatives.

Service events

School groups can raise funds with service events like car washes, dog washes, or community cleanups. Students get the added benefit of working in teams to earn money through their own efforts instead of just having their parents open their checkbooks.

School spirit items

Another good school fundraiser involves selling items adorned with the school logo such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, shorts, book covers, stadium cushions, and water bottles.

All of these promote school spirit and provide a good value for the parents who are the ones writing the checks. These same school spirit items can also be offered over time through a school store as well as an ongoing fundraising activity.

Summary

Many schools are looking for healthier alternatives to traditional fundraising products that contain large amounts of sugar and in some cases, trans fat as well. Event-based fund raising is one alternative that’s growing in popularity.

Schools can also offer catalog sales of nonfood products that will raise just as much funding or they can offer healthier alternatives such as fresh fruit, nuts, coffee, etc.

Service events like car washes also work well for school clubs and cheer squads. They also teach a good lesson in the value of hard work to get what you want.

The bottom line is that there are many healthy fundraisers for schools to choose from, so choose wisely!

Kimberly Reynolds writes for national publications about cheerleading fundraisers, ideas for healthy fundraisers and nonprofit fundraiser events.

If you live in an area like I do, you have your choice of a number of fall outings to choose from. Now’s your chance to partner with one of these venues for your next fundraiser.

Contact a local corn maze, apple orchard, or fall festival to see if they will partner with you.

Ask them if your organization can help “sponsor” a day.

Let them know that there will be no cost to them other than the cost of discounted tickets or sales. Your group will handle the marketing and publicity to bring in a large group to the event.

The venue can offer you tickets or certificates to sell in advance.

For each ticket or certificate that you sell, you get a percentage of the proceeds.

To make it even more attractive for your supporters, see if the venue will let you sell the tickets at a discount. For example, regular admission is $10. Advanced tickets sold by your organization can be sold for $8. The venue can agree to take only $5 of the sale, leaving your organization with $3 profit per ticket.

Plan a time and area for your group to gather at the venue so supporters can meet up and spend the day together.

Ask if it’s okay to bring in apple cider, hot chocolate, popcorn or baked goods to sell to your group as well. This can bring in additional revenue for your group.

Take lots of pictures and make it an annual event that families can look forward to year after year.

Halloween costumes are traditionally an item you buy and use once. Unless they’re a double duty item like pajamas or a dress-up outfit your child can play in, they’re worn one day a year then disposed of, hopefully to Goodwill.

But costumes can be expensive, so before you run out to buy one, I suggest you check out Green Halloween’s National Costume Swap Day. Here you can find a swap in your area or set up one in your neighborhood so you can exchange costumes instead of buying new ones. Save money and the environment.

The swap day is October 9, so you need to sign up now if you want to host a swap. This would be a great activity to run through a school or a kid’s sports club. Turn it into a fundraiser by asking everyone to donate 5 dollars along with each costume. That’s still cheaper than buying new and it can be a fun pre-Halloween party for everyone involved.

I came across this site the other day and was amazed by the beautiful photos. The soccer players really caught my eye as that is my family on a Saturday morning. Mali Workman proves we can all use our skills to do a little creative fundraising. She’s a professional photographer doing what she knows best to raise money for her kids’ soccer team.

You can do the same. Acknowledge a skill that you have and then package it so it’s a win-win-win for you, the organization you’re supporting, and the patrons who take advantage of your offer. In Mali’s case, the soccer team promotes her photography services. For each sitting, she gives $250 back to the soccer team, plus gives each family a discount on their sitting fee.

Do you have a skill or hobby that you can market like this? Perhaps painting, playing piano, singing, woodworking, computer skills – the list is endless. It just takes a bit of creativity.

Aside from cultivating a sense of unity within the community, fundraising benefits a number of great causes that will definitely change other people’s lives significantly. Fundraising causes range from charitable causes to community development causes. Through fundraising, communities can achieve great things-rebuild a park, install accessibility ramps on libraries and other public establishments, fund cancer research and provide medical services to the ill. Fundraising is a meaningful way to spend one’s time and efforts especially in this time of economic crisis. Because fundraisers highly depend on the number of people supporting it, getting your family members and friends to put in their time and effort will definitely benefit the fundraiser and contribute to its success. Here are a few ways in which you can get your family and friends involved in your fundraising efforts.

Educate yourself. Before you try organizing or participating in any fundraising event, you must educate yourself about the cause of the fundraiser. Know the details of the fundraising event-what the cause is all about, which person or institution will benefit from the proceeds of the fundraiser and how this charitable activity will impact the lives of those involved. Is it a good cause? How will it make things better for the person or group of people involved?

Be prepared to answer questions. After educating yourself on the important details of the fundraiser, be prepared to work your way through publicity. Because it is a fundraising event, the collected proceeds will highly depend on the people supporting the event. Each participant serves as a medium of information exchange. You need to go out there and influence as many people as you can to participate in the fundraiser.

Be a medium of information. If you want to get your family involved in fundraising, you must educate them as you have educated yourself. Explain to them the importance of this cause. Be specific-tell them about the person or institution benefiting from the proceeds of the fundraiser. If it’s going towards cancer research, then explain to them how important cancer research is in the continuing study to find a cure for this disease. Show them statistics-how many people are affected by this disease? How imperative is it that we find a cure? Details help people understand the gravity of the cause and enable them to visualize the effect of what their time and efforts can do.

Encourage charity. Karma is a simple rule that teaches us what comes around goes around. Doing a little good to others will definitely come back to you tenfold, especially if you’re doing it out of humility. Service to others is like giving back for all the blessings you’ve received in your life. Getting your family to participate in charitable activities and fundraisers will not only enable the family members to bond over a great cause but will also give you a sense of accomplishment.

Sport teams are always looking for new ways to raise money. Too much of the time, fundraising falls on already busy parents. Here is an idea to put it back in the hands of the kids!

Hold a sponsor the player contest. Have each player solicit a list of people who are willing to contribute a pledge amount for games won per season. (or goals scored if you are looking for a smaller time frame) They will also need to take responsibility for collecting the money at the end of the season.

Have the team collectively make a banner with sposors listed to be displayed at each game. This can consist of a homemade banner with poster board, or you can even get an inexpensive sign company to make one….and even donate the sign in exchange for free advertising!

A creative idea to accomplish this is to have each player hold a sign with his/her own sponsors written in big block letters. Take a team photo as well as an individual photo. You can use the team photo on the banner, also making sure that each sponsor is also listed on the banner as well. ( it may be difficult to display the players large enough to see their sponsors)

Have each player use the individual image as a thank you to his/her contributors. The can simply write “Thanks for you help” across a re-print and give to their sponsors after their pledge has been received.

The players will obviously need parents help, but it is a good ideas to have them solicit their own sponsors for this fundraising idea. It’s never too early to lean about responsibility and doing your part to accomplish a common goal!

It is definitely out of the box, so if you are not comfortable with Principal’s wrestling, consider a hoop shooting contest, or even a less physical arm wrestling match. This is something that could promote quite a bit of school spirit as well. Maybe consider this around a school event….
